This is a tiny antique rose gold brooch.  It was made during the Georgian period and is 200-300 years old.

The brooch is complete with its original pin and clasp.  It is a lovely piece of 'Memento Mori' jewellery, set with braided hair.

Memento Mori Jewellery

Pieces of this jewellery were made as keepsakes, to remember the loss of loved ones.  They were often set with hair of the deceased, and/or decorated with enameled/engraved names and dates.  The term Memento Mori is Latin.  Translated it means 'Remember you will die'.

Memento Mori jewellery was later revived during the Victorian period.  Queen Victoria had many pieces made after the death of her beloved Albert.  The general public followed suit and began commissioning Memento pieces.

The Georgian's and Victorian's did not fear death like us. They embraced it and celebrated the lives of the deceased. Memento Mori jewellery played a big part in this.

Notes

The rose gold has been tested and is at least 9ct in purity. The pin is yellow gold and 9ct in purity.
